Law at Work

LAYC HR and Employment Service

One of the benefits of being an LAYC member group is having access to our HR and Employment Service offered through employment law specialists Law at Work.  You get access to free HR advice (a couple of phone calls worth); regular e-mail bulletins on the latest employment matters; view and download a raft of policy documents all right up to date; access to twice yearly employment seminars along with 50% discount on Focus on training sessions and preferential rates if the case your presenting needs more extensive support than the scheme provides for.

The service provided is intended to give advice on one off employment issues or concerns with limits in place to ensure all member groups can access the service in line with that. It also will enable member groups to put in place appropriate policies that will minimise potential employment disputes. The service is not designed to replace expensive employment advice schemes offered by the likes of the Bank of Scotland and LAYC reserves the right to withdraw access to any  member group where they have exceeded the limits of the scheme.

Law at Work

Employment and health & safety legislation place a variety of obligations on all organisations employing staff, whether on a full-time, part-time or sessional basis. For many organisations, especially those in the voluntary sector, it can be difficult to keep up to date with the regular changes and to be sure that you have the right procedures in place.   Thankfully, through our partnership with LAYC, we’re here to support affiliate member clubs in a number of ways:

  • Free employment law policies and procedures Get things right from the start with our up to date, legally compliant policies that you can view, download and use in your own club. Hosted on the LAW website – LAYC member clubs can simply register for an account and we’ll approve your access within 24 hours
  • Free email updates on important changes in employment law and health & safety Keep up to date with developments in Employment law, HR and Health & Safety without leaving your inbox. Sign up right here.
  • Free employment law/health & safety update seminars Absolutely free and always in heavy demand, our 6-monthly 90 minute sessions throughout Scotland bring you the most relevant, up to date content in these ever-changing fields. LAYC members are guaranteed one spot at each seminar. See details of upcoming employment law updates here, and health & safety updates here.
  • Discounted rates on our half day Focus On training sessions: Put down your policies, handbooks and guidance and get stuck in to our practical seminars. These half-day sessions emphasise practical management skills, the impact of the law and useful tips and tricks for dealing with challenging people problems. Topics include the very current debate around flexible working and the changing landscape of dispute resolution. LAYC members receive a 50% discount, making these courses only £60 per delegate. Dates, locations and topics are here.
  • Advisory service – talk to one of our legal team: If you come up against a people management issue, don’t panic. LAYC members benefit from two free telephone consultations with our legal team, who specialise purely in employment law and HR. Plus we have a wealth of experience in the Scottish voluntary sector, so we understand the challenges that you face. Call us directly on 0141 271 5555 or email  You just need to let us know where you’re calling from, and that you’re a current member of LAYC. We’ll check your organisation’s name against our database, and then put you right through to one of our highly qualified legal team.

We hope to hear from you, or see you at one of our training events, sometime soon.
